Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain set to launch her boxing academy in Guwahati

Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist boxer Lovlina Borgohain is set to launch her own academy, which will be inaugurated by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati on Tuesday.

“This academy is more than just a training facility. It’s a dream realised and a promise kept to myself and to the countless young boys and girls in Assam who dream of stepping into the ring,” Borgohain said.

“With the Lovlina Boxing Academy, my deepest desire is to create a nurturing environment where aspiring athletes not only learn the art of boxing but also develop the resilience, discipline, and unwavering spirit needed to succeed,” she added.

The Lovlina Boxing Academy is a testament to Borgohain’s commitment to nurturing raw talent and providing them with world-class training and infrastructure.

It also marks a historic step in the development of sports and sporting infrastructure in the north-east region of India.

Geno FC appoints Francisco Bruto da Costa as head coach ahead of 2025-26 season

Geno Football Club named Francisco Bruto da Costa the head coach of its senior team ahead of the upcoming season.

A seasoned tactician with a wealth of domestic and international experience, Bruto da Costa brings elite-level knowledge and leadership to the club.

Francisco, a native of Margao, holds an AFC Pro Licence, the highest coaching qualification issued by the Asian Football Confederation.

His coaching journey includes high-profile roles with the Indian national teams, SC East Bengal, NorthEast United FC, and Kerala Blasters, alongside international assignments in Malaysia, Bangladesh, Egypt, and Vietnam. He most recently worked with Cong-Viettel FC in the Vietnam League 1 and the Egyptian national team with Carlos Queiroz and players like Mohamed Salah.

Joyner Antao, former coach at Sesa Football Academy, will join the technical team as Assistant Coach.

Scheffler moves into lead as Bhatia slips to 23rd

Akshay Bhatia slipped down the leaderboard with two double bogeys on the moving day at the Memorial, even as World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler was at his best with a 4-under 68 that took him to the top.

Bhatia slipped with an 8-over 80 that saw him drop to T-23, down 20 places from his overnight third place.

Bhatia who shot 70-69 on the first two days had a rough third day.

He had four bogeys on first, fifth, 10th and the 18th and double bogeys on the 11th and the 17th for an 80. It was his highest single round score of the season

Ahlawat struggles in third round but stays within top 30 in Austria

Veer Ahlawat played a round of even par with three birdies and as many bogeys to finish the third day of the Austrian Alpine Open presented by SalzburgerLand tied 28th in the standings.

Marcel Schneider of Germany continued to lead the field, heading into the fourth and final day at 15-under after a third round of 66.

Ahlawat began his round on the front nine making consecutive bogeys on the third and fourth hole before gaining back a shot on the fifth hole and then claimed back the second lost stroke on the ninth hole. It was his third birdie in as many days on the ninth.

On the back nine he dropped a shot on the 10th hole before making birdie on the 14th hole to close the day with a score of even par 70. His total score is now five under par.

The 29-year-old Gurgaon golfer, has made the cut this week for the first time since his top 20 finish at the Hero Indian Open held in March earlier this year.

Fit India movement gains momentum

The Fit India Sundays on Cycle Movement gained considerable momentum across the country on its 25th edition, celebrating World Bicycle Day, and paying tribute to the armed forces.

The Union Sports Minister, Mansukh Mandaviya, led about 1,500 cyclists in the Capital from the Dhyan Chand National Stadium, accompanied by the Sports Secretary Hari Ranjan Rao. Sports icons Yogeshwar Dutt, Saba Karim, and Sarita Mor, Bollywood actress Sharvari, and about 75,000 cyclists joined the ride from about 5,000 centres.

“The Tiranga Rally is a salute to our jawans and their sacrifice. Fitness and patriotism go hand in hand,” the Sports Minister said.

Additionally, a Fit India newsletter was launched, and a carbon credit feature, to allow cyclists to track their sessions, was introduced on its mobile app.

“Your speed from 7-34 kmph and the distance will be recorded, and your carbon credits will be added,” the Minister explained.

The monthly newsletter will have inspiring articles and training tips, among other features.

“It is a movement that links national health with national pride,” said Yogeshwar.

Dipa Karmakar flagged off the rally at the SAI centre in Agartala. It was archer Deepika Kumari and many others at the SAI Centre in Bengaluru. Cricketer Saba Karim recalled that he used to cycle to school.

“There is no maintenance, no pollution. A perfect tool for health and environment”, he said.

Aman claims bronze in Ulaanbaatar

Paris Olympics bronze medallist wrestler Aman Sehrawat (57kg) claimed a bronze in the Ulaanbaatar Open Ranking Series on Sunday.

On his comeback to competition after the Olympics last year, Aman defeated Kyrgyzstan’s Almaz Smanbekov 11-1 before being pinned by another Olympian and Pan-American champion, Mexico’s Roman Gulliermo Bravo Young, in the semifinals. However, he bounced back to beat Turkey’s Bekir Keser 12-2 for the bronze.

Udit (61kg) picked up a silver, while Amit (79kg) and Vicky (97kg) secured a bronze apiece.

UTT Juniors: Shreya helps Patriots down Pipers

Shreya Dhar won her singles and mixed doubles matches to guide Jaipur Patriots to a 6-3 victory over Ahmedabad SG Pipers in the Dream UTT juniors table tennis tournament at the EKA Arena on Sunday.

It was the second victory in two matches, by the same 6-3 margin, for the Jaipur team.

Dempo Goa Challengers also recorded its second win in two matches by beating Stanley’s Chennai Lions 5-4, with Sahil Rawat winning both his singles and mixed doubles matches.

Niki-Jeevan bested in doubles semis at Little Rock Challenger

Third seeds Niki Poonacha and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan were beaten 7-6(4), 6-3 by Aziz Dougaz and Antoine Escoffier in the doubles semifinals of the $100,000 Challenger tennis tournament in Little Rock, USA.

The Indian pair collected 30 ATP points and $1,730.
